Types Of Tax Numbers
ITIN

EIN
This is a tax ID number for businesses that have employees that are corporations or partnerships as well as those that file firearms, tobacco, and alcohol tax returns.
ATIN
This is a temporary nine-digit tax ID number that you have to apply for when you are in the process of adopting a child. IT is needed for the parent to claim the child as their dependent.
PTIN
A PTIN is for anyone who assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation. This number must appear on clients' tax returns.

How Do You Get A Tax ID Number?
To obtain a Tax ID Number, you must complete Form W9C (Application for Employer Identification Number), which includes information about your business activities and financial affairs. If you are not required to have one, you may use this form to request a Tax ID Number.
If you are requesting a Tax ID Number because you are self-employed, you will be asked to provide additional information about your business activities. ITIN
All that you need to do to get an ITIN is to fill out a W-7 Form. Additionally, you will need to prove your foreign nationality and supply a federal income tax return.
EIN
You can easily apply for an EIN online or alternatively, fill out Form SS-4 from the IRS and mail it to them (this process takes longer).
ATIN
For an ATIN, you will need to fill out Form W-7A. Accompanying the form, you will need to attach a copy of the placement documentation and the child must be placed there legally. If the child is coming from another country, there are additional rules so be aware of this.
PTIN
This number can be obtained from the IRS online within 15 minutes or you can fill out a W-12 form which can take up to six weeks to obtain.
